Lacuna
Dancing in the sun with a shadow, an uninvited partner, always a step behind every bright moment.
Comic, how we fling ourselves into the light as if the darkness doesn’t exist.
Thinking we’re faster, believing we can leave it behind if we just move quickly enough.
But, it’s there.
A presence pressing in, a cold breathy whisper on the nape of our necks.
Telling us that no matter how hard we love or laugh or stretch our arms to the sky, the darkness waits.
Forever. Always.
It isn’t resentful, the darkness. It just is. It exists.
Patient.
Knowing that in your most golden moments it remains.
You can never outrun something that moves as you do.
Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if the dance itself is what keeps you alive or if it’s just a way of pretending you don’t notice the quiet ache that thrums beneath the surface.
Vibrance and loneliness are old lovers intertwined, inseparable, always appearing at once.
You can’t have one without the other.
When your heart swells, when your blood races, when you’re drunk on possibility and hope, there’s loneliness too, lurking.
Because when you feel it all the beauty, the thrill, the wonder it’s almost too much.
You want to share it, to capture it and hold it in your hands and say, “Look, isn’t this amazing? Doesn’t this make the pain worth it?”
But no matter how tightly you grip it, life slips through your fingers, like sunlight through your fingers.
The tragedy and beauty of life lie in knowing that no matter how much light you absorb, the sun always sets.
One minute, you’re standing at the edge of a field, the sky a wild blaze of orange and pink, your body alive with the fullness of being.
The next, the chill sets in.
You notice how your own shadow lengthens, and the color drains from the world, as if the universe itself is reminding you that nothing stays.
Not even the light.
Life moves in circles. Bright bursts of meaning, followed by long silences where you wonder if the song is over.
You wake up some days with the sun upon your face, feeling infinite, and on others, the quiet is so thick you could drown in it.
You pinch yourself just to feel something, to know that your heart still remembers how to beat.
It’s in those long pauses that doubt creeps in, whispering that maybe the dance has ended, that maybe the light won’t return this time.
But it does. It always does.
You learn to lean into those pauses, to find a strange comfort in the stillness, like the way the world holds its breath between the end of one song and the start of another.
Sometimes, the most intense vitality carries the deepest loneliness because beauty, fully felt, also means recognizing its impermanence.
You see something so breathtaking, it almost hurts a sunrise so fierce it feels like it’s burning away your regrets.
You hold someone’s hand and, in that touch, realize just how long you’ve been reaching out into nothing.
And it’s beautiful, and it’s terrifying, because you know it won’t last.
We are fleeting beings, wrapped in verve and solitude, daring to feel it all, knowing every day is one closer to the last.
We move through this world, moths to the sun’s fickle flame, even when we know it won’t… can’t stay.
That’s the point, to acknowledge it, dance within it, and let it remind us that the light is worth seeking.
In the end, it’s not the sunlight or the shadow that defines us. It’s the way we dare to dance at all.
