Beside Your Fire

From the Gospel of the Unforgiven

They are watching, yes. But not with the eyes you’ve been taught to answer to. Not through the lenses of ridicule or applause. They are watching through memory. Through longing. Through the quiet hope that you, of all people, might do the thing they could not do for themselves.

And that is no small thing.

The ones who will mock you are not looking at you. They are looking through you, back at their own unfinished lives. Their cruelty has nothing to do with your offering.

The ones who love you, truly, are not waiting to be impressed. They are already setting chairs beside your fire. Already singing your name into places you have not entered.

And the ones who will be changed by your work?

They are waiting to join you.

So build it.

Not with an audience in mind. Not with success in sight. Build it because something in you will die if you don’t. Build it because pretending you don’t hear the call has become more painful than answering it. Build it because the alternative, waiting for certainty, for clarity, for applause, will only carry you further from the work you were born to do.

There is no perfect moment. No clean signal to begin. The day you start will feel like any other day. The world will still be loud. The bills will still be due. The doubt will still be a caged animal clawing inside your chest. But that does not mean it is the wrong time. It means it is real.

The people who matter most will not ask you for polish. They will ask you to show up. With the mess. With the rough draft. With the wrong word followed by the truer one. They will not need your masterpiece. They will need your presence.

And the sacred things? The things that last, the ones that shift something deep inside the people they touch? Those things do not arrive fully formed. They arrive trembling. They arrive stubborn. They arrive in pieces and demand to be loved as they are.

You will not feel ready. That is not a sign to wait. That is a sign to begin.

Build it ugly. Build it honest. Build it unfinished.

Because the important, the sacred things do not arrive polished. They arrive possible.

You need to build the thing no one told you was allowed. The thing they said you had to earn. The thing you almost buried just to stay small enough to survive.

Build it now. While the fear is still loud. While the voices still question. While you still think you’re not the one.

Because you are. You always were.

And the miracle has never needed witnesses.

It only ever needed you.
