Every day, in ways both small and seismic, I release something into the world.
A sentence spoken across a table. A thought inked into a journal. A brushstroke I don’t explain. A message sent, then regretted. A whisper. A sigh. A silence that says more than it ever should.
Each act of expression, intentional or not, is a casting. A relinquishing. A release. And whether I realize it at the time or not, everything I put out becomes a force. It changes the shape of the day.
It becomes either an anchor or a sail.
Some creations hold me in place. They keep me tethered to a version of myself I thought I’d left behind. They’re heavy with memory, thick with grief, or laced with a longing I haven’t fully outgrown. I release them not to be remembered, but to survive the memory.
I call it catharsis. I call it healing. But sometimes, what I’ve made is not release. It’s weight I wasn’t quite ready to lose.
Some days, the weight I release does not sink. It circles, it lingers, it waits to become breeze.
Anchors only hold because I let them. And sometimes, I do. Not because I love the burden, but because I know the wind is coming and I don’t yet trust it.
And yet, some days, gloriously, what I create becomes something else entirely.
A sail.
A stretch of fabric drawn from clarity and risk. Woven from breath, from belief, from the quiet decision to move. Something that catches wind I didn’t know was there. Something that moves me.
There are mornings when I feel the silence stretching around me like a tide, and all I have to offer is a single thread of sound. Enough, somehow, to summon the wind.
These are the works that lift. The honest words, the uncertain choices, the questions I don’t pretend to answer. The poems that feel like wings. The stories that turn the tide without warning. The lines that open doors in my own mind where I’d only ever seen walls.
I never really know what I’ve made until I feel the motion beneath me. Until I look up and realize I’m not where I was.
That memory I finally wrote down? It lost its grip. That truth I shared? It became a bridge. That raw, fleeting instinct I gave voice to? It caught the wind.
Not all movement is forward. Not all sails take me where I hoped to go. But movement is life. And once the sail is raised, everything begins to shift.
Sometimes, I think I’m letting go of something, only to find I’ve stayed exactly where I was. Other times, I speak something heavy and find I’m already halfway gone. There’s no guarantee. Only the casting.
Even silence is a current. It pulls, it directs, it carries what I did not have the words yet to describe.
I speak. I create. I release. And the world rearranges itself around what I’ve made.
My creations know more than I do. They choose where they go, and I follow, barefoot across the deck, trusting the motion.
I am not only what I create. But I am always changed by the creating.
On the best days, when the wind lifts and the weight loosens, I stop trying to be the anchor or the sail. I let myself be carried.
A vessel, yes.
But one that finally trusts the water.
